Intended for students who have no previous knowledge of the language. The unit is designed to provide a rapid survey of the Latin language sufficient to enable students to read selected passages of adapted Latin. It includes some historical and cultural background.

Learning Outcomes
- be able to recall English meanings for an introductory body of Latin vocabulary;
- understand and be able to apply the basic elements of Latin grammar, in particular the use of inflection (changes in the form of words) to establish grammatical functions and so create meaning;
- be able to read passages of Latin (adapted and original) and to translate these into clear English;
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the Roman cultural systems embedded in Latin, and of the influence these have had on the development of modern languages and cultures.
