Learning Outcomes

  • Memorise and apply body of the most common ancient Greek vocabulary (as selected by Cambridge UP’s Reading Greek textbook);
  • Identify and reproduce the patterns of case-endings used by ancient Greek nouns, and the patterns of personal endings used by ancient Greek verbs in the indicative, imperative, subjunctive and optative moods;
  • Recall and explain the rules which govern the formation of simple ancient Greek sentences (including conditional sentences, sentences with purpose and result clauses);
  • Translate adapted passages of simple ancient Greek into English.
  • Interpret ancient Greek of the classical and Hellenistic eras (5th-1st centuries BCE) with basic awareness of its cultural context, and some awareness of later developments in Greek culture (e.g. Byzantine transmission of classical texts).
