Introduction

Family violence is a complex social and legal issue of urgent national importance. In this unit, Legal and Policy Responses to Family Violence, you will gain a deep insight into the range of behaviours that may comprise family violence; different perspectives on the causes of and solutions to family violence; and contemporary legal, policy and other system responses to family violence.

You will explore family violence responses from a range of disciplinary perspectives – law, psychology, and criminology – drawing together academic and empirical literature, legislation, practice, policy, and real-life cases. The unit has a special focus throughout on issues of vulnerability and diversity as well as non-stereotypical, new and emerging forms of family violence. The unit is also ideal for students of gender studies, psychology, criminology, justice and policing.
