Introduction

Community Legal Practice is an experiential unit that provides students with the opportunity to work under supervision to take on the responsibilities of a lawyer representing clients with legal questions or problems.

Students develop practical legal skills through regular supervised work within the Student, Migration and Prison legal services during your CLE year. In addition, students undertake practical research work on more substantial matters for a range of community legal organisations, both within the state and nationally. The unit is 12.5 points spread over two semesters (ordinarily 1 & 2). This allows for groundwork training in the first semester to be carried into more independent practical work in the second.  Flexible arrangements – including internships and externships – can be arranged for students undertaking competing studies during second semester (i.e. overseas exchange) and can be organised, in advance, with the Unit Coordinator.
