Semester 2 Off campus offering is only available for outbound exchange students studying an equivalent unit overseas on approved international exchange.
Introduction
In the last twenty years many regimes have changed. The first important wave of this phenomenon occurred in Eastern Europe in 1989. Beyond Europe, similar developments have occurred in States such as East Timor, Abkhazia South Ossetia and, most recently, Sudan. These regime changes raise many questions of constitutional and international law. This unit will give students an introduction to the historical and sociological background of transitional governance in the various regions. The creation of new constitutions and the establishment of a new foundation of legitimacy will be analysed. From the international law perspective, questions of State succession, recognition, territorial integrity and self-determination will be examined .
