Introduction
This is an introductory unit for students with little or no prior knowledge of Japanese. This unit has an emphasis on the interactive use of the Japanese language. It develops competence in basic spoken and written Japanese. The unit also provides a competence base in grammatical knowledge and oral/aural skills from which students can proceed to HMJ102. While a key goal of this unit is the acquisition of communication skills in Japanese, the unit also provides the basic knowledge of crossâcultural communication by exploring the linguistic and cultural differences between English and Japanese.
