Nurses transform and make a positive impact on people’s lives.

We provide you with a meaningful educational experience, tailored to the many roles nurses play in our community. Our course embraces a primary health care framework, and embraces a primary health care framework, with a student-centred approach, that delivers a variety of high impact engaging learning experiences, diversity of authentic assessments, and contemporary digital learning technologies.

In addition to a blended model of learning that combines online learning with on-campus intensive periods, you will undertake a minimum of 800 hours of Professional Experience Placements aligned with your interests, and across a variety of five clinical and healthcare environments.

Your learning is delivered in a highly supported environment. We provide in-person support throughout your studies from dedicated nursing teaching staff, and guarantee a maximum of 1:12 staff to student ratio for your practical and simulation learning experiences. We're here to help you with whatever you need, when you need it, and ensure that your learning experience is personalised and focussed, just like the care you'll be providing as a registered nurse.

We'll prepare you to be solution focused, compassionate, agile, and resilient, developing the clinical reasoning and practical skills required for your role as a registered nurse.

If you need to study away from home, our Relocation and Travel Support Allowance helps cover accommodation and associated costs within Tasmania.

The Bachelor of Nursing (H3N) is a contemporary and innovative course which will prepare you for work in a changing healthcare environment. With this highly regarded degree you will learn to become part of a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals.

You will be supported by a well-equipped simulated learning environment. During the course you'll also be given the opportunity to undertake work placements in both rural and metropolitan healthcare facilities. You will develop the knowledge and skills – and perhaps most importantly, the attitude – needed to offer the highest quality health care. You will learn the best practices for the provision of patient-centred care, safety and quality in practice, and research and evidence based practice in nursing.

Once you graduate from this program you will have the knowledge and skills to apply for registration as a nurse in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).

  • 1 Demonstrate the core values of the profession from a primary health care philosophy emphasising empathy, compassion, social justice and promotion of health across the lifespan.
  • 2 Comply with the regulations and standards governing nursing practice in the delivery of quality, safe, ethical, evidence informed care.
  • 3 Function as adaptive and solution focused leaders who implement an innovative and sustainable practice, cognisant of local, national and global priorities.
  • 4 Communicate therapeutically, effectively and in a culturally safe manner with patients, families, health care professionals, industry partners and the broader community.
  • 5 Demonstrate capability in complex healthcare environments underpinned by scientific knowledge, critical thinking, clinical reasoning and a commitment to lifelong learning.
  • 6 Integrate evidence informed decision-making to transform health outcomes.
  • Minimum 800 hours of Professional Experience Placement

Professional Experience Placement (PEP) allows you to put theory in to practice in a real healthcare setting. To ensure you have the experience you need to confidently commence your career as a registered nurse, we guarantee a minimum of 800 hours of placement during your studies.

The aim of PEP is to immerse you in the professional culture of nursing and to gain a better understanding of the diverse roles of the registered nurse within the health care system in Australia. All Professional Experience Placements are completed in a full-time capacity, regardless of the study mode you are undertaking.

Theoretical studies are held on campus and online and students undertake professional experience in healthcare locations, including rural and community, throughout Tasmania and NSW. Costs associated with travel, accommodation and uniforms are met by students. Please note that students are allocated to Professional Experience Placements subject to their availability and students may be required to travel and relocate.

The University of Tasmania is integrated into all areas of industry locally, nationally and internationally be it through research or work placement programs. Talk to your course coordinator about finding an opportunity to take part in a work experience, placement, or extracurricular activities during your degree.

    Career outcomes

"If you have the passion for people and health and you’re thinking of heading back to study – go for it!

There are so many postgraduate options in nursing and I’m keen on critical care nursing, particularly burns and trauma, so the experience at a metropolitan hospital will help me determine if this is where I want to head.”

    – Joel Cresswell, Alumna
    Bachelor of Nursing

The Bachelor of Nursing is designed to prepare you for a career as a Registered Nurse, who are at the forefront of healthcare delivery. Demand for registered nurses is only increasing, with 85,000 more nurses forecast to be required to meet future healthcare needs by 2025.

Upon graduation, you can apply for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra). If you wish to work as a Registered Nurse in another country, you will need to apply for registration with the national regulatory authority of the country in which you wish to work.

You can be an integral part maintaining healthy community, working in sectors such as health promotion, mental health, or aged care, by having a person-centred focus, while providing advice, treatment, and management.

Critical care, emergency, surgical and medical nursing demand is also increasing. Acute care roles, primarily located in hospitals, are vital for an efficient and effective healthcare system to function. As a registered nurse, you'll have the opportunity to specialise across the healthcare system, in roles such as:

    • Acute care nursing, including critical care, emergency nursing, surgical, and neonatal care
    • Primary healthcare, including health promotion, sexual health, and child and family health
    • Mental health across both acute and community roles
    • Rural and remote healthcare
    • Nursing education
