This program has been designed to allow for more pathways and study locations to suit the needs of our students wanting to complete the course in two years.
Meaningful education

We aim to provide you with a meaningful educational experience, tailored to the many roles nurses play in our community. Our program embraces a primary health care framework. Our student-centered approach uses a variety of high impact engaging learning experiences, diversity of authentic assessments and contemporary digital learning technologies. Our aim is to prepare you as a compassionate, agile and resilient graduate with the effective problem-solving skills required for your role as a registered nurse.

Hands on learning

We offer a vibrant learning culture; our program uses a blended model of online learning supported by on-campus intensive periods, and a wide variety of Professional Experience Placement (PEP) in a range of healthcare facilities. On-campus intensives provide you with an opportunity to safely practice skills and demonstrate your knowledge prior to undertaking PEP. PEP allows you to apply your learning in healthcare settings throughout your degree. This blended model of learning will develop the knowledge and skills you need to offer the highest quality health care.

Professional Experience Placement

Professional Experience Placement (PEP) allows you to put theory in to practice in a real healthcare setting. The aim of PEP is to immerse you in the professional culture of nursing and to gain a better understanding of the diverse roles of the registered nurse within the health care system in Australia. All Professional Experience Placements are completed in a full-time capacity, regardless of the study mode you are undertaking.

Theoretical studies are held on campus and online and students undertake professional experience in healthcare locations, including rural and community, throughout Tasmania and NSW. Costs associated with travel, accommodation and uniforms are met by students. Please note that students are allocated to Professional Experience Placements subject to their availability and students may be required to travel and relocate.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing complete the degree equipped with the theoretical and practical skills required by for their future career as a Registered Nurse.

  • Practice consistently in accordance with the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice
  • Demonstrate the consistent, effective and coherent application of consolidated, synthesised knowledge and skills to contextualised, complex, simulated and clinical situations

  • Communicate effectively, drawing on an appropriate evidence base, in order to transmit knowledge, ideas and skills to others including patients, clients, residents and their families, peers and members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrate the ability to practice collaboratively and effectively as a member of the health care team.
  • Consistently demonstrate cultural competencies.

The Bachelor of Nursing (H3O) is a contemporary and innovative course which will prepare you for work in a changing healthcare environment. With this highly regarded degree you will learn to become part of a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals. The Bachelor of Nursing (H3O) is an accelerated degree, meaning you will complete the full six semesters of study, including placements, over a two-year period.

Bachelor of Nursing (Accelerated) courses are offered at our Hobart, Launceston, Cradle Coast* and Sydney campuses for eligible students. Please note the Accelerated course is non-transferable.

You will be supported by a well-equipped simulated learning environment. During the course you'll also be given the opportunity to undertake work placements in both rural and metropolitan healthcare facilities. You will develop the knowledge and skills – and perhaps most importantly, the attitude – needed to offer the highest quality health care. You will learn the best practices for the provision of patient-centred care, safety and quality in practice, and research and evidence based practice in nursing.

As an accredited course**, once you graduate from this program you will have the knowledge and skills to apply for registration as a nurse in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).

Career outcomes

The Bachelor of Nursing is designed to prepare you for a career as a Registered Nurse. Students can apply for registration with the national regulatory authority, Ahpra, on the completion of the degree.

If you wish to work as a Registered Nurse in another country, you will need to apply for registration with the national regulatory authority of the country in which you wish to work.

Registered Nurses find themselves working in an array of areas from community care and public health settings to schools and hospitals.,

Professional Recognition

If you are intending to apply for registration as a nurse in another country you must meet the requirements stipulated by nursing councils, licensing boards or colleges. Therefore, you should contact the registration authority in the country in which you wish to register to determine the requirements.

English Language Requirements - All Applicants

Standard 1.3 of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council requires that students demonstrate English language proficiency. All applicants must provide either a written declaration that English is their primary language, or evidence that they have achieved the minimum English language test results (see details, below), as stipulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English language skills registration standard (2019).

All applicants for whom English is not the primary language require one of

  • IELTS 7.0 (no individual band less than 7.0), or
  • Occupational English Test - OET (with a minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
  • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test: 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing, and 23 for speaking, or
  • Pearson Test of English - PTE Academic (with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking)

English Language Requirements and Mandatory Functional Requirements Declaration

Domestic Applicants: All domestic applicants must download, complete, sign, and submit the Bachelor of Nursing English Language and Mandatory Functional Requirements Declaration (PDF 139KB) .

International applicants: International applicants are not required to submit this form. However, all international applicants will be asked during the application process to agree to, and accept, both the English Language Requirements and the Mandatory Functional Requirements.

Domestic Students

Please note that admission to the Bachelor of Nursing is highly competitive and that achieving the entry requirements does not guarantee an offer for this course. Applicants who meet the entry requirements are ranked and offers are made based on the number of places available.

Domestic applicants who recently completed secondary education

Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. This is a new course for 2021. The lowest ATAR that receives an offer is related to demand. We anticipate that the lowest ATAR that will receive an offer for this course in 2021 will be: Hobart (75), Burnie (65), Launceston (65), Sydney (65).

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

Domestic applicants with TAFE study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in any discipline.

Domestic applicants with higher education study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have:

  • Partially completed an undergraduate course at Diploma level or higher (or equivalent). Applicants must have completed at least two units of study (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points). If an applicant has failed any units the application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; OR
  • Completed the UTAS University Preparation Program (or an equivalent qualification offered by an Australian University).

Domestic applicants with work and life experience

Applicants without senior secondary, tertiary or VET / TAFE study can complete a personal competency statement.

Applicants may be eligible for an offer if they have relevant work and / or life experiences which demonstrate a capacity to succeed in this course.

Special Consideration

If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors for special consideration, including economic hardship, a serious medical condition or disability.

We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.

Safety In Practice Requirements

This course includes compulsory work placements. All students must meet the course’s Safety in Practice Requirements before their first placement. The safety in practice requirements are completed separately to the course admission application.

You may articulate from the Bachelor of Nursing to the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours, Bachelor of Nursing with Clinical Honours (Transition to Practice).

With six months work experience post registration, you may pursue further study opportunities with the following courses: Bachelor of Nursing Professional Honours (Specialisation), Graduate Certificate, or Graduate Diploma in Nursing after six months post registration experience.

To be eligible to undertake the Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse pathway, applicants must hold current registration with the Ahpra, have successfully completed a Diploma of Enrolled Nursing to complete the Bachelor of Nursing program, and meet English language requirements. If an Enrolled Nurse opts to study a Bachelor of Nursing with the University of Tasmania and they have met the above requirements, they are eligible for 8 units of defined credit toward their study.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students

2021 Total Course Fee (international students): $105,456 AUD*.

Course cost based on a rate of $33,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
