All candidates will be required to study a unit in statistics and data handling and another unit negotiated with the School. Other requirements for the course include a literature review directly related to the thesis, and a dissertation. Students will be required to present their research work at a seminar.
Course objectives
The Bachelor of Health Science (Honours) prepares students for a range of career paths in the health sector, including health promotion, administration, project work, management and research, as well as for entry to graduate programs in medicine, allied health and other health specialties.
Learning outcomes
- Acquire relevant information of the principles and concepts underlying at least one sub-disciplinary area and to synthesis a systematic and logical review which identifies key issues, concepts and theory.
- Investigate and solve problems by using recognised methods of science and appropriate practical techniques and tools for the processes of discover and inquiry.
- Exercise critical thinking and judgement in developing new understanding.
- Communicate scientific results, information or arguments.
- Demonstrate personal and social responsibility through an awareness of ethical processes ad by working safety and responsibly in individual and collaborative environments.

Work placement
The University of Tasmania is integrated into all areas of industry locally, nationally and internationally be it through research or work placement programs. Talk to your course coordinator about finding an opportunity to take part in a work experience, placement, or extracurricular activities during your degree.
Career outcomes
There are employment opportunities in government and non-government medical and general health services, and in health research organisations. More specifically, positions occur in areas such as administration, management, health promotion and sales representation across a broad range of medical and health products (including diagnostic equipment and pharmaceuticals), project management, clinical research, community health groups, self-help groups, rehabilitation centres, welfare agencies, fitness centres, sports science and health and physical education. The course is also relevant to practising and potential health care professionals seeking to upgrade their qualifications.
Postgraduate study
If you successfully complete this course, you may be also be eligible to apply for a range of other postgraduate courses including Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework and research.
Professional Recognition
While there is no professional recognition, students will gain skills to allow them to move into research related areas.
Course structure
To qualify for the Bachelor of Health Science (Honours) students must successfully complete 100% load, as specified in the course schedule. Candidates will be required to submit a literature review and a research thesis on work undertaken as part of the honours course and give a presentation. All candidates will be required to study analysis and presentation of scientific data and complete an appropriate course work unit or equivalent. Students will be required to present their research work at a seminar.

Eligibility
Successful completion of a first degree in Health Science, Exercise Science, Science or other related discipline, with at least a credit average.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students
2021 Total Course Fee (international students): $30,950 AUD*.
Course cost based on a rate of $30,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).
