Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) refers to a broad domain of healing resources that encompasses all health systems, modalities, and practices and their accompanying theories and beliefs, other than those intrinsic to the politically dominant health system of a particular society of culture in a given historical period. This course has been developed to assist health professionals in developing the evidence-based knowledge and skills required to meet the consumer demand for CAM products as well as satisfying their professional and ethical responsibilities. It is a fully online course, designed to be completed on a part-time basis. It consists of eight core subjects taught by the Division of Pharmacy, School of Medicine. Candidates may complete the requirements of the course in a minimum of four semesters (two years) and a maximum of five years, from the time of first enrolment.

Career outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Medicines Management with Professional Honours in Complementary Medicines will be able to expand the scope of their health service delivery by integrating knowledge and skills related to evidence-based medicine and complementary medicine with their existing knowledge to enable them to confidently practise truly evidence-based integrative medicine.

Entry requirements

1. Candidates for the Bachelor of Medicines Management with Professional Honours in Complementary Medicines shall be qualified for entry if they have completed an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution, in a health-related discipline. 'Health-related discipline' refers to any health profession that is part of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme and represented by a National Board. Applicants with other qualifications and expertise will be considered for admission, but may be required to complete appropriate bridging units.

2. Candidates for the Bachelor of Medicines Management with Professional Honours in Complementary Medicines shall complete the degree requirements, as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than two years of part-time study and not more than five years, from the time of first enrolment.

Course Structure

3. To qualify for the degree, the candidate shall complete a load of 100%, comprising all units specified in the Schedule accompanying these specifications, and undertake such practical exercises/experience as may be required to satisfy the degree requirements.

4. The units which may be included in a course for the degree shall, unless otherwise approved by the Dean, be in accordance with Schedules, accompanying these specifications.

5. Units may be counted towards the degree only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the Faculty of Health and as summarised in the accompanying Schedule.

6. A candidate normally may not enrol in any year in units totalling more than 100% weighting, or if the candidate is in full-time employment during any given Semester, more than 50%.

7. Where two or more units of the same name or content are offered within the University, only one may be counted towards the degree.

8. In every case the candidate's choice of units and the order in which they are taken shall be subject to approval by the Dean in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 3.

Credit for Previous Studies

9. Passes in subjects or units in other courses (completed or otherwise) in this University or another approved tertiary institution (or other approved professional examining body) may be credited towards the degree, provided that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be required to do to qualify for the degree.

Miscellaneous

10. The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the Schedules to these specifications.

11. These specifications shall take effect on 1 January 2015 and shall apply to all candidates for the degree, including those enrolling for the first time in that year and those enrolled subsequently.

12. Should any difficulty arise for a candidate previously enrolled because of any difference between course requirements (such as required majors) and units offered under these specifications and those previously in force, the Faculty shall ensure that the candidate is not materially disadvantaged by these specifications.

13. The approved abbreviation for the degree of Bachelor of Medicines Management with Professional Honours in Complementary Medicines shall be BMedsMgmentProfHonsCM.

Students who are enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Evidence-Based Complementary Medicines will be able to articulate into the Bachelor of Medicines Management with Professional Honours in Complementary Medicines – the four units in the Graduate Certificate will represent the first four units of the Professional Honours course.

Students may choose to exit the Bachelor of Medicines Management with Professional Honours in Complementary Medicines with a Graduate Certificate in Evidence-Based Complementary Medicines (4 units).

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
