The Graduate Diploma of Pharmaceutical Science is a 1 year course conducted in Hobart. Part-time study over 2 years is available. Graduates will have gained knowledge in the pharmaceutical sciences, and developed skills in written and verbal communication in these areas. Graduates will have experienced problem solving in the pharmaceutical and pharmacological sciences, and will have studied the global context of pharmaceuticals. Social and ethical implications of these studies will be emphasised.

The course is designed to equip non-pharmacy graduate students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to enhance career opportunities within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries, academic pharmaceutical research, or pharmaceutical regulatory organisations.

  • 1 Have a coherent understanding of advanced knowledge and developments in disciplines relevant to pharmaceutical and pharmacological sciences by: 1.1. Demonstrating advanced understanding of various analytical techniques and their applications in pharmaceutical analysis 1.2. Demonstrating advanced understanding of cell-culture based techniques and their application in pharmaceutical and biomedical research
  • 2 Have cognitive skills in evaluating complex ideas and will be effective communicators in disciplines relevant of pharmaceutical and pharmacological sciences by: 2.1. Demonstrating the ability to critically interpret their experimental findings 2.2. Demonstrating the ability to critically reflect their findings in the light of provided feedback 2.3. Demonstrating written communication skills to interpret and formulate responses to complex problems 2.4. Demonstrating written communication skills to evaluate and analyse information
  • 3 Graduates will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills by: 3.1. Proposing appropriate methodologies to answer the pre-formulated questions 3.2. Carrying out various experiments with minimal supervision to answer the pre-formulated questions 3.3. Presenting a coherent knowledge and ideas with intellectual independence to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • Career outcomes

    It is expected that graduates may be employed in a variety of areas within the biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical industries - in the manufacturing, research, quality control and marketing of pharmaceuticals. Other organisations and institutions where employment could be expected include medical research institutes, hospitals and associated biomedical research laboratories, universities, government research laboratories, and government regulatory agencies. Other graduates will undertake Masters or PhD programs. Graduates will have an in-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical sciences which will prepare them for careers in health and industry.

    Entry requirements

    Tertiary: A minimum of an AQF Bachelor degree in a science- based discipline from UTAS or a relevant qualification, deemed to be equivalent, from another university or tertiary institution. (Equivalence will be determined by the academic assessor, Dr Rahul Patel). English Language: IELTS 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0) for International applicants only
    Credit for appropriate studies completed from other university courses may be granted. Refer Rule 6: Part 3 Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning.
    A student will be eligible to enrol in year 2 of the MPharmSc course after completing the requirements for GradDipPharmSc. A student enrol in the MPharmSc course will be eligible to exit the course with a GradDipPharmSc qualification after completing the four course work units offered in year 1 of the course.

    Options for this course

    This is a full-fee course, which means you’ll need to pay the full amount for your studies. Commonwealth Supported Places are not available in this course. However, there are still support options available for eligible students to help you manage the cost of studying this course.

    You may be able to fund all or part of your tuition fees by accessing a FEE-HELP loan from the Australian Government. FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists domestic full-fee students to pay for University, which is repaid through the Australian Tax System once you earn above a repayment threshold. This means you’ll only have to start repaying the loan once you start earning above a specific amount

    2022 Total Course Fee (international students): $32,950 AUD*.

    Course cost based on a rate of $32,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).

    * Please note that this is an indicative fee only.

    International students

    International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
