The Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health provides you with a pathway into professional practice, and will equip you to work at the front line of health protection, assessing environmental health risks and combat a range of environmental public health challenges including food safety, pollution, climate change and the prevention of communicable diseases.
Whilst primarily based in Hobart, the course has a whole of Tasmania focus, Developed in partnership with industry and the profession, this course provides a pathway to further study into the Master of Public Health. This ensures that graduates are practice-ready and have strong links with practitioners, employers and systems that address environmental health and able to progress to relevant further study in public health.
If you have a passion for science, health and environment and like working outdoors and with people, this course is for you. It is a pathway to a career not just a job.

Taught by experienced Environmental Health Officers, your studies include real world assessments that reflect the work of Environmental Health Professionals. This course includes a 2 day intensive workshop, field trips and work placements across Tasmania, giving you over 100 hours of industry experience.

Entry requirements
For Domestic students
A completed recognised bachelor degree (AQF7) (or higher award) in a health or science discipline; and A minimum 50 credit points (equivalent of one semester full-time study) of recognised basic science units that were included at Bachelor level and must include: • a minimum of 12.5 credit points (one unit) of chemistry; and • a further 37.5 credit points (equivalent to three units) in other science areas (e.g. microbiology, physics, anatomy and physiology, life science). International students must provide evidence of meeting the university’s English language requirements for public health courses.
Credit transfer
Students may be granted advanced standing reducing the duration of the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health qualification based on a case-by-case assessment of unit equivalency or RPL credit.
Articulation
Students who complete the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health may receive credit for up to 100 credit points for units studied within this course into the Master of Public Health.
Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Cost shouldn’t get in the way of you studying.
If you’re a domestic student, you may be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place in this course. This means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.
You may also be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.
