Introduction

This unit examines how ageing is a social construct. The unit will begin by examining the global phenomena of population ageing, and how language is used to discuss the social change from a young to older population. The unit also examines ideas and attitudes towards ageing and older age across cultures, including Indigenous communities. You will examine and critique social attitudes towards ageing, the impacts of ageism, and how the use of language impacts on our understandings and experiences of ageing and older age. This will involve reflecting on your own views, values and beliefs.
