Nutrition, Dysphagia and Dementia CAD205

Introduction

This intermediate unit highlights the importance of adequate nutrition and hydration for people with dementia and the swallowing problems (dysphagia) that can be a factor in malnutrition and dehydration resulting in declining health, repeated hospitalisations, and decreased quality of life. Evidence-based approaches to optimising health and quality of life with regard to nutrition and swallowing will be explored.

  • Examine factors that affect the nutrition and swallowing of people living with dementia and how these may relate to quality of life, health, and wellbeing.
  • Discuss and examine the effectiveness of care strategies as therapeutic interventions used to support the nutrition and swallowing of people living with dementia.
  • Identify the role and value of services that provide nutritional and swallowing specialist care for the person with dementia.
  • Communicate contemporary nutritional and swallowing information and practices related to people with dementia to an intended audience, e.g., academics, peers, or the broader community.
