Neuroscience Research in Dementia CAD301
Hobart
This unit is being phased out, no new enrolments are being taken.
Introduction
This unit is about how research in the neurosciences informs our understanding of dementia and is the basis of contemporary care, diagnosis, treatment and potential cure. A key outcome will be that students will acquire the skills and background knowledge to interpret the primary scientific literature, and the ability to critically read secondary sources in the popular media related to dementia. Further, students will gain experience in communicating their findings to their peers and to non- specialist audiences. The Unit will examine the latest outcomes related to neuroscience research, and will explore investigative approaches using experimental models relevant to dementia. The unit will also include a discussion of the primary quantitative (statistical) methods underlying neuroscience research. Students will have the opportunity to undertake analyses of relevant data sources to extract key findings, to present on a topic to other students, and engage in online discussions.
