Introduction
The provision of dementia care is shaped by overarching policy at the local, national and international level. This advanced level unit will explore the concept of policy, and the issues that influence the translation of evidence into policy and offer contemporary perspectives on how policy is implemented to drive equitable service provision for people with dementia.
We will cover the role of policy in dementia care and ponder how to translate evidence into practice through knowledge translation and improvement science. Leadership skills are important to be able to change, influence and improve practice. To enable an appreciation of this vital aspect, content will be included on basic leadership theory.
This is an elective unit in the Bachelor of Dementia Care. This unit is also available to students from other courses, subject to meeting any prerequisites.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe how health and social policy is developed, internationally, nationally and at a local level; explain how research evidence can be translated into day to day practice and, finally, outline how policy influences practice.
- Develop an effective set of practice-based guidelines relating to dementia care
- Define quality improvement and demonstrate how to effectively improve your practice relating to dementia care.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of what makes an effective healthcare leader.
