Hobart

Introduction

This unit engages students with the primary research literature in the neurobiology of dementia, including pathological and functional research, and a range of models and outcomes used to assess potential therapeutics. Genetics, lifestyle risk factors, biomarkers, imaging techniques and assays are examined to equip the student to effectively evaluate the primary research literature. Students choose five content modules from a range of options to tailor their learning to particular interests, and are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of a written MyContext assignment requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Online Learning - approx. 10 hours per week.

Assessment

Online module content assessments (5 × 10%, total 50%);

MyContext assignment proposal (250-500 words) (10%);

MyContext written assignment – to use and apply knowledge of neurobiology and neuropathology from the content modules to the student’s personal and/or professional context, e.g. gaining insight to symptoms and behaviour, evaluating resources / policies, or similar, using evidence from the primary literature (choice of format: 2500 words, 20 minute presentation with peer discussion) (40%).
