Professional Experience Placement (PEP)

To be eligible to undertake PEP, all students must be “Verified” as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in Practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements. Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit.

Grade

At the completion of CAM101 an IC (Interim Completion) grade is awarded because of the year-long nature of some assessments. The result for both CAM101 and CAM102 will be released at the end of semester two.

Introduction

This foundations unit will give students a framework on which to base their undergraduate medical studies. This includes the structural and functional organisation of the human body, beginning with the study of biomolecules and cells, the classification and types of human tissues and their functions, and an introduction to the organ systems. This unit explores the normal constitution and function of the integumentary system (skin) and immune system and introduces microbiology and cellular responses to stress, injury and ageing. Students will learn and develop communication skills for medical practice and become familiar with clinical diagnostic processes including vital signs. Students will discuss the scope and core principles of public health and the organisation of the Australian health system, and how health, wellbeing and disease are constructed, promoted and prevented in society and medicine. This unit explores the roles that a medical practitioner plays in the Australian health system and the wider Australian community, including principles of ethics, professionalism and leadership. Students will learn how to practice self-care and acquire and develop the skills needed to engage in an active learning environment, including scoping, locating, synthesizing, and managing information.

In order for students to undertake Professional Experience Placements (PEPs), there are mandatory requirements to be completed before students can enter a PEP venue. These are outlined in the Safety in Practice Agreement. The Safety in Practice disclosure (Section 8 in the Safety in Practice Agreement), requires the student to establish, with the University, their capacity to perform the functional requirements of the course in which they are enrolled. The Safety in Practice Agreement also requires that student agree to the Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct, agree to undertake a police (criminal record) check and to gaining evidence of their immunisation and infectious disease status. Students enrolled in the School of Medicine are required to comply with these requirements prior to the allocation of, and student participation, in learning placements and clinical rotations in health care settings. Students who do not comply will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not meet the requirements of the unit with regard to Professional Experience Placements. Teaching Pattern

The unit is organised around weekly cases. The teaching content is delivered in the form of lectures/presentations, facilitated small group learning sessions, practicals, workshops, tutorials and on-line self-directed learning.

Students must be available full time Monday - Friday with some compulsory out of hours activities scheduled throughout the semester.

Assessment

Assessment includes Examinations, Assignments and Other Unit Requirements.

1. Examinations:

  • 3 x online, open-book MCQ/EMQ Domain 1 quizzes across the semester, each worth 2% (6% of full year total).
  • End of semester examinations - 4 x 2-hour (worth 4 x 6%=24%).  These examinations assess all aspects of the unit, using multiple choice, extended-matching, short answer and/or essay questions.

2. Assignments:

It is a requirement to submit all assignments as per the Unit Outline.

3. Other Unit Requirements:

  • Complete Laboratory safety module (CAM101-102 Workplace Health and Safety Module) and Laboratory Safety Quiz
  • Hand Hygiene Australia Student Health Practitioner Modules.  Upload the certificate of completion to MyLO.
  • Personal and Professional Development Portfolio (PPD)
  • Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Workshop
    Students must attend and participate in the Tasmanian Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Workshop to increase their understanding and ability to describe the factors that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including history, spirituality and relationship to land (part of AMC graduate outcome 3.4).
  • Rural Communities Program (Rural Week) participation
    Students are required to attend and participate actively in all sessions during the week.
  • Case task presentation in CBL tutorial
    Students are required to undertake two formative presentations and one summative presentation over the semester in case-based learning (CBL) tutorials
  • Submission of compliance documents, and current first aid certificate are described in the unit outline. These requirements include minimum satisfactory standards for many of the required items.
  • Blended Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Tertiary Students course.
    Complete all online components of the Blended Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Tertiary Students and upload the Certificate of Completion for the eLearning component.  Attend and participate in a ½ day workshop, complete the MHFA online assessment after the workshop, and upload the Certificate of Accreditation or Completion to MyLO.

The mark and grade for year 1 (CAM101 and CAM102 combined), derived from a weighted total of all quizzes, examinations, essays and assignments, will be released at the end of semester two. In order to pass CAM101/102, a student must pass the weighted total of all assessment tasks carrying marks across the whole year, must pass the weighted total of all end of semester examinations across the year, pass the weighted total of essays and assignments across the year, and complete all other unit requirements satisfactorily.
