Cellular Basis of Disease CAM107
Introduction
This unit will examine the biological processes that lead to disease. We will explore the world of infectious disease including bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic diseases, and how the body’s immune system detects and destroys these pathogens. This unit will delve into how the immune responses can go awry leading to disfunctions such as allergies and autoimmune disease. We will also look at the cellular basis of non-communicable diseases such as cancer and dementia. To deepen our understanding of the research investigating these diseases, we will also examine common research and diagnosis laboratory techniques.

- Describe the biology of infectious organisms and viruses, and how they contribute to disease
- Describe how the immune system responds to infection and tissue damage, and how these immune mechanisms can both prevent and contribute to disease processes
- Explain the pathophysiology of non-communicable disease
- Apply basic laboratory techniques used in cellular disease biology and describe how they work
