Professional Experience Placement (PEP)

To be eligible to undertake PEP, all students must be “Verified” as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in Practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements. Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit.

Introduction

This unit builds on preceding units by introducing the student to the gastrointestinal, renal and reproductive systems. Students will explore clinical conditions associated with the gastrointestinal, renal and reproductive systems and develop an understanding of the relevant basic medical sciences in the context of common clinical conditions associated with these systems. Students will learn about history taking and clinical examination of the gastrointestinal,renal and reproductive systems. Through the use of weekly cases, students will begin to develop their diagnostic skills.

The unit will consolidate much of the knowledge and skills obtained in the preceding three units and lay the foundation for a more integrated patient-centred approach to medicine, which will be further developed and emphasised in following years.

In order for students to undertake Professional Experience Placements (PEPs), there are mandatory requirements to be completed before students can enter a PEP venue. These are outlined in the Safety in Practice Agreement. The Safety in Practice disclosure (Section 8 in the Safety in Practice Agreement), requires the student to establish, with the University, their capacity to perform the functional requirements of the course in which they are enrolled. The Safety in Practice Agreement also requires that student to agree to the Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct, agree to undertake a police (criminal record) check and to gaining evidence of their immunisation and infectious disease status. Students enrolled in the School of Medicine are required to comply with these requirements prior to the allocation of, and student participation, in learning placements and clinical rotations in health care settings. Students who do not comply will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not meet the requirements of the unit with regard to Professional Experience Placements. Teaching Pattern

The unit is organised around weekly cases consisting of lectures, presentations, small group learning sessions, practicals and tutorials. The number of hours varies each week depending on the number of lectures and practical sessions. This unit is web-dependent including on-line discussion and formative and summative assessment tasks. Students will develop clinical examination skills in a working environment. Students must be available full time Monday - Friday with some compulsory out of hours activities scheduled throughout the semester.

Assessment

Assessment includes Examinations, Assignments and Other Unit Requirements.

Examinations:

Mid semester written examination and end of semester examinations including two written papers and an applied examination. These examinations assess the lecture, clinical, practical, tutorial and dissection-based material using multiple choice, extended-matching, short answer and case-based integrated questions. A four station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) will cover clinical examination and communication skills over CAM201 and CAM202.All examinations must be attempted.

Assignments:

It is a requirement to submit all assignments as per the CAM202 Unit Outline.

Other Unit Requirements:

Clinical examination and history skills are assessed during a series of clinical competency sessions over the year. In semester two, students must demonstrate competency in the gastrointestinal examination and one history competency session. A pass mark is required in all clinical competencies performed in year 2 (CAM201 and CAM202).

The requirements for the Kids and Families Program, Personal and Professional Development Portfolio (PPD), pharmacology log book interviews, Case-Based Learning (CBL) participation and presentations, and external visits are listed in the unit outline. All Other Unit Requirements must be completed to a minimum satisfactory standard in order to be eligible to progress to third year.

The mark and grade for year 2 (CAM201 and CAM202 combined), derived from a weighted total of all examinations, essays and assignments, will be released at the end of semester two. In order to pass CAM201/202, a student must pass the weighted total of all examinations (mid semester and end of semester) across the year, pass the weighted total of essays and assignments across the year, and complete all other unit requirements satisfactorily.
