Professional Experience Placement (PEP)

To be eligible to undertake PEP, all students must be “Verified” as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in Practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements. Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit.


CAM304 rounds out the fundamentals of systems-based clinical science, covering neuroscience, endocrinology and pathology. Concurrently, students undertake clinical rotations in hospital and community settings, integrating their scientific knowledge with clinical practice, developing their skills in history taking, examination and basic clinical procedures and extending their knowledge of professional ethics and the Australian health sector. Third year includes four clinical rotations: Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care, and Clinical Specialties (Psychiatry, Paediatrics and Child Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology). In addition to discipline-specific teaching, the rotations introduce students to the hospital setting, diagnostic reasoning, investigations and simple management plans.

All students complete a two-week rural clinical placement in the Primary Care rotation, and a Medical Research Opportunity project engaging with research activity in the School of Medicine and Menzies Research Institute.

Teaching Pattern

Small group and whole group teaching and learning activities, and two 8-week supervised clinical rotations (allocated from Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care & Clinical Specialties; the other two are undertaken during CAM305).


Written examinations - The academic program in CAM304 is assessed by interim written assessments, and written and applied examinations at the end of semester. These examinations assess the lecture, practical and dissection material using multiple choice, extended-matching and short answer written questions. Subject matter from the clinical rotations is assessed in the CAM305 written examination.

IN-Course Requirements - The third year requirements for the Kids and Families Program, several  competencies required by the rotations, and other requirements details in the Unit Outline must be completed in order to pass third year. These requirements include minimum satisfactory standards for many of the required items.

At the completion of CAM304 an IC (Interim Completion) grade is awarded because of the year-long nature of some assessments. The result for successfully completing both CAM304 and CAM305 is an ungraded pass (UP).
