Teaching Pattern

Small group and whole of year teaching and learning activities, and 2 x 8-week supervised clinical rotations (allocated from Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care and Clinical Specialties).

Assessment

There are four components to assessment in CAM305: Written Examinations, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), Rotation and Domain Requirements, and the Personal and Professional Development Portfolio.

Written examinations - The academic program in CAM305 is assessed by an end of semester written examination. The four clinical rotations are assessed by the rotation written exam at the end of semester two. The examination may include Extended Matching Questions (EMQ), Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Short Answer Questions (SAQ). A formative mid-semester written examination of similar format will be offered to students.

OSCEs - Students' clinical skills are assessed in an integrated 6-station OSCE at the end of semester, covering material from both their rotations that semester. Students must pass a set number of OSCEs in the two integrated OSCE sessions (the first set of six OSCEs at the end of the first semester, the second set of 6 OSCEs at the end of the second semester) to pass the OSCE component for the year.

Rotation and Domain Requirements - The third year requirements for the Kids and Families Program, as well as a number of competencies required by the rotations, must be completed in order to pass third year. These requirements include minimum satisfactory standards for many of the required items.

Personal and Professional Development Portfolio - Students will complete a number of descriptive and analytical documents outlining their personal and professional development across the first three years of the MBBS. Students must complete all of these PPD Portfolio requirements satisfactorily to pass third year overall.

The final result for CAM305, in combination with CAM304, is an ungraded pass (UP). Each category of summative assessment, as outlined above, must be passed in order to pass the year.
