Advanced Research Skills CAM306

Hobart

Introduction

Advanced Research Skills is a unit designed as a capstone unit for students completing a degree in biomedical or biological sciences, and will provide the opportunity for students to synthesise higher level research skills from their previous learning experience. The unit will help students develop skills in responsible decision-making in experimental conception, design and communication. Students will also develop an understanding of how biomedical researchers achieve accountability in their work practise. The unit is a core unit of the Foundations of Medical Research Major within the Bachelor of Medical Research (BMedRes) course.
As a student in this unit you will consolidate and build on research skills you have developed in first, second and third year units within the Bachelor of Medical Research and will cover the principles of research design and analysis, ethics in medical research, scientific controversy, scientific critique and scientific communication. To do this, a collaborative and supportive learning environment will be developed through interactive group activities and engagement with leading medical researchers in the School of Medicine.
The concepts you will engage with will provide you with the skills necessary for working in the medical research workforce and/or for continuing your education as a higher degree student. The teaching is also intended to focus on the identification and further development of transferable skills that will prepare you for life outside of the biomedical research laboratory.
