Professional Experience Placement (PEP)
To be eligible to undertake PEP, all students must be “Verified” as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in Practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements. Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit.
Introduction
This unit is an integrated Clinical Placement year. Students are placed in a range of clinical attachments. Student learning outcomes are organised to deliver the Australian Medical Council, AMC, medical student outcomes. This unit is integrated with the programme in the following year of the course. Case based learning sessions will cover core clinical issues and will be delivered by a mixture of learning opportunities and will require a self-directed learning approaches. The MBBS curriculum uses the AMC 4 domains as an organising principle under which the outcomes are assessed. The 4 domains are: Science and Scholarship (the medical graduate as scientist and scholar), Clinical Practice (the medical graduate as practitioner), Health and Society (the medical graduate as a health advocate) and Professionalism and Leadership (the medical graduate as a professional and leader). On completion of CAM418 students receive an IC (Interim Completion) result. A final result is granted on completion of CAM419.
Note:
Students are required to enrol concurrently in CAM418 and CAM419.
In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health and School of Medicine policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

| Assessment | Formative Assessment: Portfolio of Learning The formative components of the portfolio may vary across clinical schools. There are essential components of the portfolio which are common to the three schools and become part of the summative exit assessment. There would normally be a review of portfolios conducted at Clinical School level to monitor progress. Each clinical school may provide formative assessment opportunities relative to clinical knowledge and skills developed in rotations. Summative Assessment: All three clinical schools share summative assessments. This will consist of two written (MCQ and EMQ) examinations, clinical (OSCE) components, and portfolio assessment (see handbook for detailed criteria).The essential components of the portfolio are:1. a log of skills, in which procedures seen and/or performed during the hospital and community placements are recorded;2. two Reflective Journal Pieces, written in a prescribed format of at least 1000 words in length, that assess the Domain of Health and Society and the Domain of Professionalism and Leadership;3. an assessment for each clinical attachment signed off by the supervising senior medical clinician (Consultant or General Practitioner), based on performance during the attachment, including performance in written and clinical assessment tasks set by the discipline concerned during the attachment;4. complete a minimum of 10 satisfactory Mini-CEX reviews per year with representation from each major rotation;5. evidence of participation in CBL sessions;6. an introduction regarding the student's professional attributes, capabilities, aspirations, community engagement and achievements. To PASS the year overall requires: achieving the desired competency on the written MCQ and EMQ examinations; achieving the desired competency in the OSCE stations examined and obtaining a satisfactory achievement in all elements of the portfolio submission. The result awarded for this Unit is an Ungraded Pass (UP).In Year 4, all elements of the portfolio must be submitted prior to the November MCQ and EMQ papers and OSCE summative assessment, or the candidate will be deemed to have failed the course. |
