Medical Care on Offshore and Inland Waters CAM635
Introduction
Medical Care on Offshore and Inland Waters provides a both a theoretical and practical introduction to the planning and delivery of medical care in various aquatic settings: from scientific expeditions and Antarctic cruises on large ships through to white-water rafting and kayaking expeditions. The unit runs as an approximately 8-day residential, intensive course that covers non-clinical theoretical topics such as maritime regulations and maritime search and rescue, clinical topics such as marine envenomation, drowning and cold injury, and then combines these with practical scenarios and exercises in a swift water setting. The unit concludes with the completion of one online written assessment.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe an approach to expedition planning in the maritime and other aquatic environments, particularly that related to health care and the design of medical kits;
- Describe and apply the Accident Management Plan for emergencies in wilderness areas, for both single and multiple patient problems;
- Describe and apply approaches to safety, prevention, and rescue in aquatic environments
- Describe and apply principles of leadership, followership and team-working in emergency situations
- Demonstrate the management of common and important problems and conditions encountered in freshwater and marine aquatic environments.
