Introduction

In this unit students will be introduced to pharmacology, scheduling and drug classification systems and essential information on pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism. Students will gain the knowledge and skills required to safely administer medications.  Medication safety, the prevention of adverse events, detection of risk and documentation are emphasised.  Electronic medication management systems are introduced. Students will have the opportunity to gain an appreciation of legal and ethical issues that impact on medication administration. The relationship between safe medication management and the capability of the Registered Nurse is highlighted in this unit. Students will have the opportunity to develop their Professional Portfolio in this unit.
