Introduction

This unit introduces students to the complex topic of ageing from a person-centred perspective. It is divided into two key modules – 'Normal Ageing' and 'Ageing with ill-health'. The content of this unit will focus on healthy, positive ageing and on the contributions that nurses, and other health professionals, can make to promote autonomy, wellness and the quality of life of older people - including those with dementia and other illness-conditions. This unit presents students with an opportunity to identify and discuss their assumptions about ageing, and to critically reflect on how ageist attitudes and stereotypes can potentially impact on quality of care.
