This unit introduces students to fundamental concepts in the care of children, youth and their families in Australia. A variety of epidemiologic, sociocultural, political and developmental perspectives on child health will be explored. Opportunities are provided for considering how social and personal values influence our approach to care for children, youth and families. Students will build on their interpersonal and communication skills and refine these to address the needs of children, youth and families. Common childhood conditions will be examined including emphasis on unique aspects of children's anatomy and physiology, and the use of clinical reasoning to enhance analysis of assessment findings in children and youth. Students will extend learnings of how to exercise clinical judgement and integrate the principles of primary care and health promotion in their approaches to planning care while working in partnership with children, youth and their families. Students will have the opportunity to further develop their Professional Portfolio in this unit.
