Foundations of Mental Health Nursing Theory 2 CNA741

Introduction

This unit builds on the level 1 Foundations of Mental Health Nursing material addressed in unit CNA740 and is a co-requisite unit to CNA743. The unit addresses the issues relevant to the treatment setting, such as hospital-based, and community-based mental health care within an ecological perspective. Issues of mental health promotion and illness prevention, crisis intervention, mental health rehabilitation and recovery are examined, which also include the contributions of non-government and voluntary agencies. You will also be introduced to what many describe as sub-specialty mental health areas, such as child and adolescent; older persons and the specialist areas of forensic/correctional and alcohol and other drugs. The notion of issues relevant to clinical supervision and clinical practice development will be explored.

  • Compare the conceptual frameworks of mental health rehabilitation and recovery.
  • Critically discuss a range of key mental health practice issues as they relate to the acute care and community contexts.
  • Analyse the levels of intervention and activities related to primary prevention nursing interventions; health education; environmental change; social support and stigma reduction.
  • Describe and critically evaluate contemporary issues and practices relating to the role of the mental health nurse in mental health sub-specialist areas.
  • Construct evaluative judgements about the suitability and applicability of clinical supervision and practice development to mental health nursing practice.
