Introduction

This unit examines the changing philosophies that have underpinned the practice of child and family health. The unit content will particularly focus on critical reflection, social constructions of motherhood, primary health care and strategies to promote the health of children and families in the community such as anticipatory guidance and the facilitation of group work with parents.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss the effective use of interpersonal skills and group work in child and family health.
  • Analyse strategies to promote the health of children, mothers and families in the community and the philosophical concepts underpinning these processes.
  • Discuss the experience of perinatal depression in terms of its associated vulnerability/risk factors, presentation, and impact on the family.
  • Critically reflect on the concept of motherhood as a social construction.
