Introduction

This unit commences with a broad historical view of the emergence of science, philosophy of science, logic and reasoning. It then focuses on the major research underpinnings such as: realist vs subjectivist perspectives, incorporating epistemology and ontology; abduction, induction and deduction in ontology; and axiology. This will provide a framework to enable the candidates to discuss methodologies and methods for designing and conducting research.The unit will provide the candidates with an understanding of: Basic applied translational research; Methods, Methodology and evolution of methodologies; the qualitative-quantitative continuum; critical, positivist, and interpretive paradigms and approaches. This unit provides the foundation to developing critical skills to the application of knowledge to research practice.
