Introduction
CSA157 Pharmaceutical Science and Practice 1 integrates two areas of study: Pharmaceutical Science and Pharmacy Practice.
Pharmaceutical Science is the study of the formulation, manufacture, stability and efficacy of pharmaceutical dosage forms. Pharmacy Practice is the study of the role of the pharmacist in optimising the use of medicines and improving health outcomes. You will study the principles of:
Dosage form design and formulation
Extemporaneous compounding of dosage forms
Dispensing
Pharmaceutical calculations
Communication skills
This unit requires you to apply your knowledge of pharmaceutical science and pharmacy practice to a range of professional and practical situations including compounding pharmaceuticals, dispensing pharmaceuticals and communicating medicines information to patients. There is a significant amount of practical based learning in the dispensing laboratory

Learning Outcomes
- Describe the available options and demonstrate appropriateness of various drug delivery methods and technology
- Apply pharmaceutical science knowledge (including pharmaceutical calculations) to identify and solve drug-related problems that may contribute to improved quality use of medicines
- Prepare and supply medicines accurately and efficiently, including extemporaneous preparations , in accordance with legislative and accepted professional practice standards
- Develop organisational and reflective practice skills that underpin good professional and ethical practice
- Search and appropriately reference drug information sources
- Demonstrate appropriate communication skills and techniques incorporating patient-centered care principles in order to optimism health outcomes
