Clinical and Pharmaceutical Microbiology CSA207

Introduction

This unit introduces pharmacy students to the world of microbiology, infectious diseases, and the role of pharmacists in contributing to safe and effective infectious disease control and management. It will commence with an exploration of the basic concepts of microbiology, including laboratory techniques used to isolate, culture, and identify microbes from specimens. This will be followed by a focus on medically important bacteria, viruses, prions, algae, fungi, and parasites. Concurrently, you will explore the mechanisms through which pathogenic agents colonise a susceptible host and subsequently, elicit clinical symptoms as well as an immune response. You will also examine the epidemiology of transmissible diseases that are common in healthcare and community settings. Together, this knowledge will provide a basis for critical evaluation of current tools that are available for the prevention of key infections, including, vaccines, medications, and public health measures. Finally, you will examine the challenges posed by microbiological contamination of pharmaceutical products, as well as the significant risk associated with the spread of antibiotic resistance and the need for appropriate antimicrobial stewardship in all healthcare settings. Lectures and tutorials will cover these aspects of the unit. The tutorials will reinforce material presented during the unit and lead to an understanding of the role of pharmacists in the control of infectious diseases.
