Introduction
This unit is designed to give the student a broad understanding of the immune system and its functions. Topics include: activation and regulation of innate and adaptive immunity and the principles governing vaccination; the molecular basis of antigen specificity; antibody structure and interaction with antigens; disorders of the immune system; tumour and transplantation immunology; the application of immunological reactions for the diagnosis and monitoring of disease; and the use of immunological techniques as analytical tools in the clinical laboratory.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe the key components of the normal innate and adaptive immune responses and differentiate between the different causes of abnormal immune responses
- Show competency in basic immunological technical skills and critically assess and analyse laboratory results
- Communicate scientifically both orally and in writing using professional/biomedical language and terminology.
