This unit is for undergraduates in biomedical science and other life sciences.

Introduction

The unit provides an in-depth study of the biochemistry of metabolic fuels with an emphasis on carbohydrates & lipids, associated metabolic reactions, pathways, enzymes and metabolic regulation.

Prerequisites

((KRA101 or KRA113) and (KRA102 or KRA114)) or (CXA171 and CXA125) or equivalent.

Teaching

Teaching Pattern

Two-hour lecture (13 weeks); Two-hour tutorial (13 weeks); Three-hour practical class (6 weeks).

Assessment

Two written exams consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions (10% each); one group written metabolic assignment (20%); one laboratory book (10%); Final theory exam (50%).
