Introduction

This unit is designed to meet ESSA accreditation criteria in Exercise Physiology in the cardiovascular and pulmonary domains. Students apply foundational knowledge of cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions, comorbidities and treatments, safety, risk and capacity monitoring considerations, to design and translate into practice, safe, evidence-based exercise interventions for clients with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the pathological and pathophysiological bases; diagnostic and prognostic procedures and indicators; common treatments; and indications and contraindications for exercise for cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.
  • Conduct clinical assessments relevant to client conditions and Accredited Exercise Physiologist scope of practice.
  • Appraise medications, surgical and medical treatments/complications, and clinical and safety risks and their implications on clinical status, exercise and functional capacity in the design and delivery of safe and effective exercise for clients with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.
  • Identify and respond to changes in clinical status including adverse signs/symptoms and formulate appropriate clinical responses that include session modification or termination, first-aid and onward referral for clients with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of Accredited Exercise Physiologists and other health professionals in the clinical management of clients with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions, and communicate professionally with clients and other health professionals.
