Introduction
This unit is designed to meet ESSA Professional Standards for Exercise Physiology graduates in the Mental Health domain. Students will learn to apply behaviour change strategies and health coaching to clients with a broad range of Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) target pathologies. Students will apply foundational knowledge of common mental illnesses, and their treatments (while considering safety, risk and client capacity monitoring), to design and translate into practice, evidence-based exercise interventions for clients with mental illness (within the ESSA AEP target conditions for mental health).

Learning Outcomes
- Deliver behaviour change strategies and modify communication to facilitate behaviour change in clients through the full range of AEP target pathologies.
- Reflect on the core principles of mental health legislative framework; standard diagnostic criteria and major classifications; mental health pathological and pathophysiological bases; co-morbid presentations; ethical practice; screening and outcome tools; standard treatments and therapies for AEP target conditions in the mental health domain.
- Conduct clinical assessments relevant to client conditions and Accredited Exercise Physiologist scope of practice.
- Appraise medications, surgical and medical treatments/complications, and clinical and safety risks and their implications on clinical status, exercise and functional capacity in the design and delivery of safe and effective exercise for clients with AEP target conditions in the mental health domain
- Respond appropriately to changes in clinical status including adverse signs/symptoms and formulate appropriate clinical responses that include session modification or termination, first-aid or onward referral
- Explain the roles and responsibilities of Accredited Exercise Physiologists and other health professionals in the clinical management of clients with mental health conditions, and communicate professionally with clients and other health professionals.
