Introduction

This unit is designed to meet ESSA Professional Standards for Exercise Physiology graduates in the Mental Health domain.  Students will learn to apply behaviour change strategies and health coaching to clients with a broad range of Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) target pathologies.  Students will apply foundational knowledge of common mental illnesses, and their treatments (while considering safety, risk and client capacity monitoring), to design and translate into practice, evidence-based exercise interventions for clients with mental illness (within the ESSA AEP target conditions for mental health).

Teaching Pattern

This unit is delivered in flexible mode with a combination of online active learning modules (2hrs/wk) and face-to-face skills based practical workshops (4 hrs/wk) .

Lectures 24hrs, and 24 hours of Practicals/Tutorials. Self-directed learning approximately 80 hrs. A combination of lectures, practicals and self-directed learning per semester. (~130 hours).

Assessment

1. Practical Exam: Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS) 20 minutes, weight: 30%

2. Case Studies, weight: 30%,

3. Examination - invigilated (externally - Exams Office), weight: 40%.
