Foundations of Physiotherapy CXA706

Introduction

This unit introduces students to foundational knowledge and skills required for physiotherapists to perform their roles as resilient, confident, and autonomous practitioners in the delivery of safe, quality, person-centered, evidence-based practice. The scope of physiotherapy practice is examined, and students learn how the biopsychosocial model, ICF framework, and person-centered care approaches are applied in physiotherapy practice. Students will develop knowledge and skills to perform evidence-based physiotherapy assessment and treatment and evaluate client outcomes using physiotherapy clinical decision-making models. The principles of professional practice are introduced to support students in the development of foundational clinical reasoning skills with specific application of clinimetrics in formulating and confirming hypotheses, establishing clinical goals, and evaluating the clinical outcome using a biopsychosocial and person-centred care approach. The processes involved in trauma healing, inflammation, and pain in lower extremity musculoskeletal conditions are studied as the basis for developing knowledge and skills to prescribe physiotherapy exercise and electrotherapy intervention and implement rehabilitative interventions to facilitate healing and functional recovery in musculoskeletal injuries, in both post-operative and conservative management settings.
