Advanced Physiotherapy CXA714

Introduction

This unit consolidates knowledge and skills related to professional practice issues and communication in physiotherapy. The unit retains the focus on client assessment, planning and interventions using a clinical reasoning approach. Physiotherapy approaches are studied in relation to prevention, management and maximisation of client potential and the application of a client-centred and evidence-based approach to direct client interventions. Students will develop physiotherapy clinical skills and knowledge for the evaluation and management of neurological, advanced, chronic and complex conditions and includes studies in advanced concepts in physiotherapy professional practice, health communication and areas of complex and chronic disease physiotherapy management.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the aetiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical presentation of common neurological disorders
  • Critically appraise prior knowledge of chronic and complex conditions from core streams of physiotherapy (musculoskeletal, neurosciences and cardiorespiratory) and explain theories of chronicity and complexity.
  • Analyse clinical events, incorporate evidence and consider the risks and benefits of all assessment and intervention methods for modifying practice approaches when working with clients with complex conditions.
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical decision-making to adapt to changing clinical circumstances.
  • Perform advanced skills in a safe manner, related to physiotherapy clinical practice in complex areas of practice including burns management, hand therapy, persistent pain, and oncology.
  • Explain different classes of medications commonly used for neurological, chronic and complex conditions and how different medications affect the body.
