The unit examines the interactions between people and other elements of a complex system in terms of occupational engagement and performance. The theory, method and principles of human factors science are introduced to situate occupational engagement and performance in a range of influential contexts. Students will develop knowledge of the risk management process informed by WHS legislation and apply principles of human factors science to the design of systems to enhance human performance and safety within workplace, community, leisure, and home settings. Work related determinants of health are examined and students will gain an understanding of how work participation can impact physical, psychological, and cognitive health and wellbeing. Students will develop skills required to improve activities of daily living and identify, assess and control health and safety risks using risk management principles to enable participation by modifying environments using human centered design principles.

- Analyse the way human factors facilitate or constrain a person’s performance and safety as they participate in daily life.
- Conduct assessments involving instrumental activities of daily living (ADLs) and leisure activities which are performed in and around workplace, community, leisure, and home settings.
- Use clinical reasoning to formulate evidence-based interventions to increase occupational performance of activities by adapting tasks, changing environments, developing skills and prescribing aids and equipment.
- Use systems thinking and human centered design concepts to plan, implement and evaluate enhance human performance and safety within workplace, community and home settings.
- Critically reflect on developing strategies, using the principles of resilience engineering, to strengthen resilient performance in self and others.
