Counselling Skills 1 KHA501

Introduction

On successfully completing this subject, students will be able to use practical skills for more effective interpersonal communication, as well as basic counselling skills. This unit examines styles of counselling with integration of theories of counselling with its practice. The unit teaches both basic skills in counselling and more advanced skills necessary in more complex counselling situations. Multicultural counselling will be addressed.

  • Understand and demonstrate basic counselling skills
  • Understand different models of counselling
  • Make accurate observation of verbal and non-verbal behaviour including the ability to discriminate between observation and interpretation of behaviour
  • Have knowledge of a generic three-stage model of counselling
  • Establish and maintain a constructive and facilitative counselling relationship
  • Identify and demonstrate basic counselling micro-skills
  • Demonstrate ability to present and constructively critique one’s own counselling performance.
