Professional Experience Placement (PEP)
Students will be allocated PEP within individual health care agencies. Students must be available 5 days a week (40 hours) during the allocated PEP, and must be prepared to undertake a range of shifts – morning, evening and nightshift, which may include weekends, as per roster provided by the healthcare agency. Students may be expected to relocate and are expected to travel to where PEP is available. To be eligible to undertake PEP, all students must be ‘Verified’ as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in Practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements.
Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit.
PEP dates MAY differ from University of Tasmania calendar semester dates.
In order to commence PEP, you must:
- Complete and submit all pre-placement compliance documentation as outlined on the PEP Website. Please adhere to the timelines that are outlined in the Safety in Practice Student Compliance Documentation Guidelines and Procedure.
In order to pass PEP, you must:
- Demonstrate the necessary capability in practice for this particular unit of study against the NMBA’s Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) as evidenced in your PEP workbook;
- Attend 100% of the allocated PEP hours.
Missed Attendance at PEP
In the event of being unable to attend a placement, it is your responsibility to:
- Notify the facilitator/preceptor and the health care agency administration office prior to the commencement of the shift to be missed;
- Notify the School of Nursing via the absence from PEP form including uploading supporting documentation;
- Log absence in PEP workbook and have signed by a Registered Nurse. NOTE: Students are not automatically permitted to make-up missed PEP time. If a student has missed any of the allocated time for PEP for any reason, including illness or extenuating circumstances, they may be required to repeat the unit of study.
Unsatisfactory Performance in PEP
In accordance with the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016), a clinical facilitator/preceptor may assess a student’s performance in PEP as unsatisfactory for reasons including unsafe practice, under developed practice skills or illness during the placement making achievement of unit objectives unrealistic.
Please Note: The School of Nursing has responsibility for determining final assessment results and reviews unsatisfactory PEP assessment at the end of semester only.
Withdrawal from PEP
A student can be withdrawn from PEP in the situations listed in the College of Health and Medicine PEP Risk Management Procedure.
Introduction
This unit incorporates simulation-based learning and 120 hours of Professional Experience Placement (PEP). The unit content will be delivered using case based-learning and requires you to develop knowledge and clinical skill acquisition in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care in meeting the needs of individuals and families across a range of health conditions. These include acute and chronic neurological, endocrine, digestive and oncology conditions through the lifespan, including pharmacology. This unit requires you to continue developing your clinical reasoning capabilities and communication skills, including the principles of interprofessional collaborative practice. Students will be expected to function within the scope of a nursing student in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016).

- Apply the framework of clinical reasoning to deliver evidence informed and person-centred care to individuals with neurological, digestive, endocrine and oncology conditions.
- Demonstrate clinical skill acquisition related to the digestive, neurological and endocrine systems and oncological conditions.
- Explain the physiological effects of medications on individuals with oncological, digestive, endocrine and neurological conditions.
- Display well developed communication skills and professional behaviour.

| Teaching Pattern | This unit is delivered in a blended delivery mode comprising of face-to-face intensives as well as content delivered online via MyLO (My Learning Online). You are expected to devote around 10 hours per week to the study materials, assessment tasks and self-directed learning. You can interact with the online content at any time, which will be in a modularised format. Online tutorials/webinars will provide further opportunity to engage with All Intensives in the Bachelor of Nursing Science are condensed face to face campus experiences. Intensives are usually scheduled between Monday and Friday (see individual unit calendars). Intensives provide an opportunity for -student engagement, networking with staff and peers, intra-professional and inter-professional learning opportunities and engaging with guest speakers. Intensives are designed to provide you with an opportunity to apply theory to practice and develop your skills in the practice of nursing. The Intensives provide a key role in facilitating the development of your skills, knowledge and understanding. This is in preparation for both your upcoming Professional Experience Placements and your ongoing engagement in the Bachelor of Nursing Science. Attendance at PEP is mandatory. In the interests of both personal and public safety, as a registered nursing student with AHPRA you have a professional responsibility and duty as part of your regulatory obligations to ensure the provision of safe and effective nursing care to the public. Therefore, your attendance at intensives is required and non-attendance will result in the cancellation of PEP and a delay in course completion. Whilst the unit provides a weekly guide, it is expected that you set your own however, expected to have engaged with the relevant online learning activities before you attend the Intensives. |
