Course rules for R7H Master of Social Work (Advanced Practice)


1 [i] In these specifications `Faculty-- means the Faculty of Arts acting on the advice of the Board of Humanities and Social Science.

[ii] The Faculty may accept as a candidate for the degree of Master of Social Work (Advanced Practice) a person who has completed a Bachelor of Social Work degree or the Master of Social Work at the University of Tasmania or another degree from another tertiary institution deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent.

2 Candidates shall complete the award requirements as hereinafter prescribed, in not less than three years (thirty six calendar months) part-time study with a maximum of five years (sixty calendar months) from the time of first enrolment, unless otherwise approved by the Faculty. In certain circumstances, Faculty may approve a suspension of candidature for a period not exceeding twelve months.

Course structure  

3 [i] To qualify for the award the candidate shall successfully complete four units and a Thesis as listed in Schedule A.

[ii] The units which may be included in a course for the award shall, unless otherwise approved by the dean, be in accordance with Schedule A.   [iii] Enrolment in the units will be subject to approval by the dean.

4 [i] Units may be counted towards the award only if they have been taken in accordance with prerequisites determined by the Faculty and as summarised in Schedule A.

[ii] A candidate normally may not enrol in any two semesters in coursework units totalling more than fifty percent (50%) and in the case of the Thesis, fifty percent (50%) weighting.

Credit for previous studies  

5 Passes in subjects or units in other honours or postgraduate courses completed or otherwise in an approved tertiary institution may be credited towards the award, providing that the Faculty may specify what more a candidate so credited shall be relluired to do to qualify for the award.


6 The Faculty may from time to time make amendments to the schedules.

7 These specifications shall take effect on January 1st 2011 and shall apply to all candidates for the award.

8 The approved abbreviation for the award of Master of Social Work (Advanced Practice) by coursework shall be MSocWkAdvPrac.

9 The research project shall be bound and lodged for examination in accordance with the Rules of Higher Degrees. A candidate may also be required by the Faculty to deposit a representative collection of material relevant to the thesis.

10 The examination of the thesis will be conducted by at least two examiners appointed by the Faculty.

11 After considering the reports of the examiners of the research project and reports from assessors of the candidate's performance in the remaining sections of the course, the Faculty shall decide whether the candidate merits the award of the degree or, if not whether the candidate should:

(a) present an oral defence of the thesis, or

(b) submit an amended research project within such further period as the Faculty should determine, after which the Faculty shall then decide upon the award of the degree.
