This program of study is provided for students who intend to embark on a career in the maritime industry as navigating (Deck) Officers and Masters on commercial vessels. It provides the knowledge and skills required to safely manage and operate vessels.

Course content includes navigation and vessel handling, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation and shipboard safety. The program is designed to integrate with professional short courses and training at sea so that successful students will not only obtain an Advanced Diploma or Bachelor Degree but also a Certificate of Competency issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

The program is fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention, as amended in 2010).

Year 1 - Pre Sea Deck

Year 2 - Watchkeeper Deck

Phase 1: Pre-Sea Deck One Semester at AMC plus mandatory short courses. Phase 2: At sea Shipboard Operational Experience (TAGS). Phase 3: Deck Watch Keeper One Year at AMC plus mandatory short courses.

  • 1 Plan and conduct ship navigation and facilitate cargo handling and storage using nautical concepts and principles to ensure ship safety.
  • 2 Assess nautical problems in standard-operational and emergency scenarios by analysing and interpreting a range of data sources to meet stakeholder requirements.
  • 3 Support the safe operation of a ship, and care for its people by using management theories and leadership skills required as a deck officer.
  • 4 Demonstrate Professional stewardship through the use of ethical codes and regulatory frameworks to maintain the safety of persons and the protection of the environment.
  • Sea-time is a built-in phase of your AMC seafaring qualification. Work-based training is a work integrated learning opportunity linking academic learning with its practical application in the workplace. Students are required to complete the following units during their qualifying sea-time: JVD219 Shipboard Operational Experience (Deck) 1, JVD220 Shipboard Operational Experience (Deck) 11 and JVD229 Shipboard Management Experience (Deck) 1.

Seafaring students must gain employment as a trainee marine deck or engineer officer with a shipping company in order to obtain the required qualifying sea service and complete on the job AMSA requirements. Employment may be sought either before or after Year 1 studies (also known as pre-sea training).

On completion of the relevant phases of study, you will be eligible to undertake the AMSA final examination. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible for the relevant certificate of competency to serve on ships.
