Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate broad knowledge of marine engineering by:
1.1. Applying a diverse array of scientific concepts to safely operate and maintain the main propulsion system in a commercial ship.
1.2. Determining the appropriate role of auxiliary and shipboard systems in multiple contexts to ensure the safe operation of a commercial ship.
2. Solve marine engineering related problems by:
2.1. Interpreting a range of available data sources in standard- operational and emergency related scenarios on a commercial ship.
2.2. Organising regulatory appropriate responses which enable the continued safe operation of a commercial ship.
3. Practice effective leadership in marine engineering by:
3.1. Identifying how various management theories can be applied in common marine engineering roles.
3.2. Demonstrate knowledge of communication, collaboration and decision making strategies which enable safe operation of a commercial ship.
4. Demonstrate personal and professional stewardship through:
4.1. Make use of regulatory frameworks relevant to marine engineering in the international shipping industry.
4.2. Performing all tasks in an ethical manner where the safety of persons and protection of the natural environment are of the greatest importance.
Career outcomes
The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) is the recognised pathway to becoming an AMSA certified marine engineering officer. This degree provides additional knowledge and skills that will be of benefit to students seeking a career at sea. The degree will also equip professional engineering officers with the additional knowledge and skills that they are likely to require to take up senior shore-based professional positions such as:
- Governmental or intergovernmental regulators and organisations such as AMSA, EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency), IMO (International Maritime Organization)
- Senior position in a shipyard
- Technical manager in a shipping company
- Marine superintendent or safety manager in a shipping company
- Product, R&D, sales and service managers in companies manufacturing marine engines and equipment.
- Surveyor in a Classification Society
- Marine Surveyor with a Port State Control authority such as AMSA
- Work in Marine insurance companies
- Maritime Education and Training, research and teaching positions
Professional Recognition
The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) is approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for eligibility towards the following Certificates of Competency: Engineer Watchkeeper (Trade Entrants).
Course structure
Phase 1 – Pre-sea education and training at the Newham Campus (Launceston)
Phase 2 – Shipboard Operational Experience / Work book units – Sea-time*
Phase 3 – Engineer Watchkeeper education and training at the Newnham Campus (Launceston)

Eligibility
We encourage you to apply for the courses you most want to study. If you’re not eligible to enter your chosen course right now, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best pathway option.

This course is only available to international applicants. Domestic students please refer to the Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Engineering).
Special consideration
If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors, including economic hardship, serious medical condition or disability.
We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.

Students who hold a current AMSA Certificate of Safety Training (COST) or have completed any of the STCW short courses please contact the Australian Maritime College Maritime Training Administration Office as this may affect your start date.

Students who have completed AdvDipAppSci(MarEng) can articulate to the BAppSci(MarEng) program offered by AMC with full credit.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students

International students
