The Bachelor of Environmental Design is a three-year course offered full time and part time through the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology and available through the School of Architecture & Design. It is undertaken on campus in Inveresk, Launceston.

Students enrolling in the course select one of two design specialisations offered in Architecture or Interior Design. Students study most of the first year foundation units in common allowing for cross design fertilisation and student networking and also complete specialist units related to their chosen field of design.

Each specialisation has the design studio/design workshop at its core supported by studies in relevant history and theory, building/manufacturing, environmental ethics, technologies and practices, and design communication. Elective units allow students to broaden their study and take a minor study in a related area if they wish.

Course delivery is through design studio or workshop projects, lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshop activities and site visits. Assessment is based on design studio or workshop projects, assignments, and tutorial, seminar and workshop participation.

Course objectives

The Bachelor of Environmental Design prepares all graduates for an increasingly design research driven practice with a focus on environmentally sustainable design within each specialisation.

The Bachelor of Environmental Design (Architecture) is primarily a pre-professional course and thus aims to produce graduates whose creative abilities are developed to a level of competence necessary to gain admission to the Bachelor of Environmental Design with Honours, Master of Architecture or Master of Architecture with Honours, and equivalent courses in the fields of architecture, urban design and related design areas.

The Bachelor of Environmental Design (Interior Design) prepares graduates for interior design practice as independent designers, within interior design practices or in multidisciplinary architecture and design practices. The focus of the course is on commercial, retail, residential and public interiors. The course aims to develop students' creative abilities to a level sufficient to gain admission to the Bachelor of Environmental Design with Honours (Interior Design).

Practical experience

This project is particularly looking at the process of research through design and design-based research. What's happening with Cave Urban is we have a collaborative process going where the students are getting an amazing experience to work directly with people in the profession.

Students from all specialisations are eligible for Associate Membership of the Design Institute of Australia.

Course structure

In the Bachelor of Environmental Design you enrol in 2 majors, a minor and 4 student electives. There is a compulsory major for all students and you choose a second major, which has a linked minor, and 4 student electives.

This degree consists of a total of 24 units comprising:

A reversed major of 8 units: 4 introductory, 2 intermediate, 2 advanced units
A (standard) major of 8 units: 2 introductory, 2 intermediate, 4 advanced units
A minor of 4 units: 2 introductory, 2 intermediate units
Two breadth units: units designed to deepen and extend learning across discipline boudnaries
Two student elective units: units which may be chosen from this or any other subject area within the University, provided they meet the unit level requirements for the degree (see next point below), unit pre-requisites and quotas. You may take individual units or study the equivalent of a second minor through your student electives and try out different subject areas – it's your choice.
Unit level requirements for the degree are: between 8-10 units at introductory level, 6-10 units at intermediate level and 6-10 units at advanced level.
