This honours degree is an optional continuation of the Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology allowing students to pursue advanced studies in a particular area of interest in ICT. The degree exposes students to research and advanced topics in ICT beyond what is offered in the three-year undergraduate degree. It provides high achieving students with an opportunity to cultivate research and development skills appropriate to the ICT discipline and to understand the fundamentals of ICT-related research.

BICT(Hons) graduates should be ICT professionals with the additional attitudes, abilities and skills to:

  • select, adapt and effectively apply research processes, methodologies, tools, and techniques to plan, conduct and manage and independent ICT-related research project;
  • critically analyse research literature to conduct a literature review;
  • be aware of the social consequences of ICT-related research and respond appropriately to ethical considerations and act in accordance with best practice and industry standards;
  • analyse, synthesise and evaluate factors to answer a research question, and to defend a research approach;
  • document and communicate effectively the research techniques used and the results of the research both orally and in a written thesis;
  • evaluate and communicate the likely utility of emerging or advanced ICT to an individual or organization;
  • apply abstraction and computational, creative and critical thinking to a problem, identify and define the ICT requirements, apply knowledge of advanced ICT principles and technical skills to develop and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of potential solutions; and
  • continue lifelong learning.

Career outcomes

The honours degree opens a range of career opportunities. Students with honours are particularly sought after by leading employers, and can choose from more interesting research and development positions because of their extra skills and proven abilities. Honours is an ideal pathway for high-achieving graduates to enter a doctoral program (PhD), which provides a wider range of career opportunities, including research, analytic or academic positions.
