Due to the circumstances around COVID-19, you will begin your studies online. However, when Government guidelines change, on-campus studies will be reintroduced.
The Bachelor of Architecture & Built Environments explores the interaction between design and inhabitation at different scales and addresses challenges presented by environmental, social and economic change. It will develop the creativity and critical thinking skills that will enable you to engage with local and global communities and push the boundaries of architecture and the built environment.

Our course is built around features unique to our University. Design studios focus on our island home, which provides natural and heritage environments and the people that allow for detailed studies and real impact. Our curriculum centres on a Learning-By-Making practice that has characterised the University’s architectural programs for over 25 years. Accessible studio spaces and workshops allow for experimentation and play, and our size fosters a spirit of camaraderie.

The Bachelor of Architecture & Built Environments is holistic in its approach, integrating histories and theories, construction techniques and building performance, professional and ethical studies, and design research and communication into project-based units. You will develop participatory skills and learning methods invaluable for design practice.

The Bachelor of Architecture and Built Environments is a pre-professional course designed to ensure our graduates have the competencies necessary to gain admission to the Master of Architecture, and equivalent courses in design fields addressing the built environment.

Core units within the program will develop creativity and innovative thinking, and provide a grounding in sustainable and ethical practice. Electives choices will enable you to design your portfolio and skill set, allowing entry into careers and pathways in your field of interest.

When you study with us, your multi-disciplinary theory and history education provides a foundation for a wealth of practice based and applied learning experiences.

Purpose-built learning spaces

Our learning and teaching environment provides world-class facilities to ensure that all students enjoy a rewarding university experience that is collaborative, practice-based and applied. Generous student study spaces provide for independent study and group work.

Your classes are located in a converted 1951 diesel locomotive workshop. The conversion was designed by Six Degrees Architects and Sustainable Built Environments, and has won multiple awards for design excellence in sustainability and adaptive re-use. Its industrial character exemplifies our strong environmental focus, timber research, and learning by making philosophy.

Industry leading facilities and technology

Inspiration in Architecture & Design begins with our award-winning building located in Launceston’s historic Western Railway Yard at Inveresk. Flexible studios and teaching spaces within the former diesel workshop offer creative environments for interactive learning. State-of the-art workshops are equipped with a full spectrum of manufacturing technologies ranging from traditional fabrication equipment, Computer Numerically Controlled routers, laser cutters, 3D printers, and a Kuka 6-axis industrial robotic arm.

Dedicated Mac and PC computer labs offer a wide range of industry standard software for design, digital fabrication and Augmented and Virtual Reality, including Rhino 6 3D, Fologram, ArchiCAD, Revit, and the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.

The Bachelor of Architecture & Built Environments program offers students a range of practical possibilities. In addition to units in our globally-recognised, Live Build, Learning-By-Making program, you can gain credit for Work-Integrated Learning in practical internships. You will also have the opportunity to take overseas study tours, and study on exchange at partner institutions around the world.

Overseas study experiences

Our international exchange programs offers you the chance to gain amazing global experiences while you study, with opportunities ranging from two-week study tours such as a trip to Vietnam to work with sustainable materials and local communities, to semester exchanges at partner universities around the world.

We’re here to help you every step of the way, including offering a range of scholarships and financial assistance options. You may also be eligible for OS-HELP Loans or scholarship funding to assist with airfares, accommodation and other expenses.

Work-Integrated Learning is embedded throughout your studies. Some of our existing and recent partnerships include the MONA FOMA, Dark MOFO and Junction Arts festivals, Parks and Wildlife Tasmania, state  and local governments and not-for-profit organisations.

Architecture and its cognate fields are in a state of continuous evolution. The Bachelor of Architecture & Built Environments will provide multi- and interdisciplinary frameworks allowing for agility in this ever-changing landscape, as well as work-ready skills demanded by employers, including evidence-based problem solving, critical thinking, effective communication and time management. By undertaking community-engaged, hands-on projects, you can graduate with a portfolio of your own work, created in consultation with real clients.

Our Architecture program is the first step towards becoming a qualified architect. To pursue this path, you will follow up your undergraduate degree with the postgraduate Master of Architecture. Alternatively, you may continue with an Honours year as a pathway to a research higher degree.

Our graduates have very transferable skills across both programs, and have pursued careers in fields such as:

  • building design
  • construction and project management
  • environmental and government policy
  • disaster relief and international aid
  • exhibition and event design
  • architectural consultancy
  • object design
  • digital fabrication

Each year, the University offers more than 900 awards to students from all walks of life, including: those who have achieved high academic results, those from low socio-economic backgrounds, students with sporting ability, students undertaking overseas study, and students with a disability.

Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior to study.
