The University of Tasmania’s new science degree provides you with a foundation of core skills in science, analysis and rational thinking, and entrepreneurship. You have options to focus your study in one or more scientific disciplines, and learn the methods to apply your skills and knowledge to the practical needs of industry, business and government in both scientific and non-scientific roles.

From 2018 onwards, our new curriculum offers you more flexibility and choice in how your degree is structured, real-world learning embedded in every course, and a choice of two Honours pathways. In addition to traditional research honours, we now offer an integrated, work-focused Applied Honours year which is open to all students who successfully complete their bachelor degree.

Course objectives
Our exciting new degree structure is built to prepare you for your future career, no matter where your path takes you.
In addition to a deep understanding of a scientific discipline of your choice (or two if you choose to study two majors), you will learn core knowledge and skills in research and analysis, data handling, entrepreneurship, and professional soft skills such as time and project management, team work skills, and preparing and presenting reports. This core knowledge is designed so that no matter what scientific discipline you focus on, you will be able to apply your skills and knowledge across a range of industries around the world.
The degree is also focused on delivering genuine practical experience, with options for field trips, research projects, industry engagement, work integrated learning, and even international study opportunities included a core component of your studies. We prepare you to hit the ground running when you graduate by giving you a study experience directly related to where you may find a career.
You will be able to apply the scientific method through a range of disciplines, identify problems, gather evidence, and form and communicate your conclusions based on research and experience. This is why the Bachelor of Science with Honours is one of the most sought after degrees by employers, because our graduates are prepared for anything.

Several specialist labs operate on-campus that have direct links to industry, delivering real-world practical experience and networking opportunities. The Molecular Genetics Laboratory has contributed to a range of projects in conjunction with CRC Forestry, Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute, Australian Antarctic Division, Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies, and CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research.

Course structure
A Bachelor of Science with Honours normally takes four years to finish and requires the successful completion of 24 units and an honours year.
The flexibility of this degree allows for many structure options; however, a typical, single major degree will be made up of the following components:
Your first three years
- Discipline major (eight units)
- Discipline minor (four units)
- Degree core knowledge (three mandatory units and one breadth unit of your choice from a selection)
- Experience and engagement (eight units) comprising:
- Degree electives (two paired science oriented units from a selection)
- Student electives (four units of your choice from anywhere in the University)
- Breadth unit (one unit of your choice from a selection)
- Experience and Engagement unit (one unit of your choice from a selection providing genuine E&E experience such as work-integrated learning, research, fieldwork, or overseas exchange)
You can further diversify and improve your career options by using your student electives to complete a double science major, or experience another field of study from another Faculty, like Arts or Business.
Fourth honours year
Applied Honours is a new form of honours that enables students to apply their knowledge through interdisciplinary, team-based projects solving ‘real-world’ industry or community problems locally, nationally or internationally. It may include internships, placements and student exchange at an appropriate level.
Research Honours is the traditional honours pathway comprising a full year research project. You will need to maintain at least a credit average for your degree to be offered honours, in which case you will have a choice between research and applied honours pathways.

Eligibility
If you're interested in studying the Bachelor of Science with Honours, you'll need to meet the General Entrance Requirements of the University, and any course-specific requirements.

Mature age students/non-school leavers
You will need to meet University General Entry Requirements through alternative qualifications or experience.
You will also be required to complete foundation units depending on your choice of major (or demonstrate equivalent qualification or knowledge). If you don’t need to meet a prerequisite, these units are a great way to refresh your knowledge and give you the best preparation possible for staring your Bachelor level studies.

International Students
All international applicants will need to meet the International General Entrance Requirements.
For those applicants who are nationals of and currently residing in a country where English is NOT the official language, evidence of an IELTS or TOEFL test must be provided. The Bachelor of Science requires an IELTS (Academic) of 6.0 with no individual band less than 5.5.
You will also need to meet any course specific requirements with recognised qualifications, or equivalent experience. More information is available at the international future students website.
Credit transfer
Credit for appropriate studies completed in TAFE and other university courses may be granted. You can apply for advanced standing as part of the application process, or it can be assessed independently via a separate application.

If you successfully complete the Bachelor of Science with Honours, you may be eligible to apply for a range of other postgraduate courses including Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework and research. Alternative entry pathways
If you meet the minimum ATAR but haven't completed the required pre-requisite unit(s), we offer foundation units to help you bridge the gap. Many run in spring and summer school so you can meet a prerequisite and not delay the start of your Bachelor level studies. HECS scholarships may also be available for domestic students.
Even if you don’t need to meet a pre-requisite, these units are a great way to refresh your knowledge and give you the best preparation possible for starting your Bachelor level studies.

If you do not meet the minimum ATAR you should consider enrolment in the Diploma of University Studies (Science pathway), which includes the mathematics and chemistry foundation units, as a pathway to the Bachelor of Science with Honours.
If you do not meet the General Entry Requirements (GER), you should consider enrolment in the Diploma of University Studies or the University Preparation Program.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students
2021 Total Course Fee (international students): $143,097 AUD*.
Course cost based on a rate of $33,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).
